Sérgio Proença holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the Federal University from Paraná (1978), a master’s degree in Structural Engineering from the University of São Paulo at São Carlos (1981) and PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of São Paulo (1988). He spent a Postdoctoral period at the Department of Structural Engineering of the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, (1990), working under the supervision of Prof.Giulio Maier. He was also a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA (2008). Currently, he is Full Professor of the Structural Engineering Department of the University of São Paulo at São Carlos and the President of the International Cooperation Office of USP. His present researches activities include cooperations with abroad institutions as Politecnico di Milano, Italy, Laboratoire de Mécanique et Technologie LMT-Cachan, France, Instituto Superior Tecnico of Lisbon and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The research activities are focusing on the following subjects: Mechanics of materials (Damage Mechanics and plasticity), nonlinear structural analysis, numerical methods (non-conventional and generalized finite element method).
